Fix your Google Business Profile before your account migrates, because Google Ads pre-populates your campaign from it and significant changes to your business name, address or primary category can pause the campaign for 24 to 48 hours.
Facts on this page were checked against Google's pages on 2026-09-30.
Your Business Profile is the one part of this migration you can work on without a date from Google. It feeds the campaign you'll be running, it's also what shows you in the map pack when you aren't paying, and errors in it cost you either way.
What does Google Ads pull from your profile?
Google's migration page says Google Ads "pre-populates your campaign setup using details from your Google Business Profile." The pieces, in its words and ours:
| From your profile | What happens |
|---|---|
| Business name, address, hours | Sync in one direction, from the profile to Google Ads, daily. Hours, phone number and minor name changes sync within 24 hours |
| Categories | Every supported category on your profile is switched on by default. You can choose a subset of 1 to 10, and at least one service type must be on for each active category |
| Service areas | Prefilled from the areas on your profile, or from your business address if the profile lists none. You can add or remove cities, counties or ZIP codes |
| Photos | Pre-populated, then customizable separately |
After migration, Google says service areas, ad schedules and categories operate independently of your profile. So the profile sets your starting point, and Google Ads takes over from there.
What can pause your campaign?
Google says: "significant updates to your business name or physical address will trigger a standard verification review to keep your account secure. This review typically takes 24 to 48 hours, during which your campaign may temporarily pause." Its FAQ adds primary category to that list.
That's Google's statement. What follows is our advice. If your name, address or primary category is wrong today, fix it, but do it early enough that a pause falls before migration and not on top of it. Then stop editing those three fields until you've seen the migrated campaign serving. We'd rather you read this page a week before your date than the morning after it.
One caution about timing. Google doesn't say how long before migration a review would finish, and it says nothing about edits made at the same moment as the move. We've seen online claims that edits during migration cause a pause. We couldn't find that on Google's pages, so treat it as unconfirmed.
What should you fix first?
Here's the prep list, yours to copy. Do it in this order because the top items decide what gets pre-filled.
BUSINESS PROFILE PREP
1. Primary category: is it the service that earns most of your leads?
2. Additional categories: only ones you really do. Each active
category needs at least one service type.
3. Service areas: every city, county or ZIP you'll serve,
and none you won't. Prefill copies these.
4. Business name: exactly as on your signage and license.
No keywords added.
5. Address: matches your storefront, or your business address
if you don't have a storefront.
6. Hours: correct, including holidays. One option for your
ad schedule syncs to them.
7. Phone number: one that's answered. Leads route to it.
8. Photos: current, yours, recent.
9. Write down what you changed and the date.
Notice item 4. A changed business name is the kind of edit Google says can trigger a review, so keep the name true to the real world and leave it alone.
Why bother if the ads are paid?
Two reasons. A profile with the wrong category or service area sends wrong settings into the campaign Google builds for you. And your profile is how you show up in Google Maps without an ad, which is the part you own whatever happens to the ad product.
We'd also say this against our own interest: if your leads come almost entirely from Local Services Ads, a tidy profile won't replace them this month. Organic map visibility builds over months 3-6, not weeks.
How can you check your profile quickly?
Our free Google Business Profile audit kit scores your profile and lists fixes in order, and the services kit covers the services and categories fields. The Google Business Profile grader in Narsil SEO (a Pro tool) gives a ranked report card if you want it done in the software.
Who doesn't need this?
If your account has already migrated, your service areas, categories and schedule now live in Google Ads, so this list matters for the name, address, hours and primary category only. Start with the first-login checklist.
