Open Graph tag generator: make your links worth clicking
The full OG and Twitter Card block with a live preview, plus warnings for the mistakes that quietly break link previews. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
The three mistakes that break most share cards
- Relative image paths. og:image must be an absolute https URL. Platforms fetch the image from their own servers, and a relative path resolves to nothing there.
- Wrong image size. 1200 x 630 is the size that renders cleanly everywhere. Smaller images get rejected or rendered as a thumbnail; extreme ratios get cropped unpredictably.
- Stale platform caches. Fixing the tags fixes future scrapes, not past ones. Force a re-scrape with the platform's debugger after every change.
One more, subtler: writing the og:title for search instead of for the feed. The share card competes with everything else in a scroll, so lead with the claim, not the keyword.
Where this fits
The full setup (what the tags do, the sitewide defaults, and the cache-refresh routine) is in our Open Graph tags guide. Share tags are the distribution half; the search half of the same metadata is your title and description, which you can pressure-test in the SERP preview tool. The free Page Audit checks both on any live URL. Everything free lives on the giveaway shelf.
FAQ
- What does the OG tag generator produce?
- The complete meta tag block for social sharing: og:title, og:description, og:url, og:image, og:site_name, og:type, plus the matching Twitter Card tags. Fill in the fields, watch the preview, copy the block into your page's head. Warnings fire for the common breakers: relative image paths, over-length titles, over-length descriptions.
- Do Open Graph tags matter for SEO?
- Not as a ranking signal, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise. They control how your link renders when a person or platform shares it, and a link with a real card gets read and clicked where a bare URL gets skipped. Distribution is how content earns the links and mentions that DO move rankings, so the tags matter one step upstream of where people look.
- Why does my page still show the old preview after I fixed the tags?
- Platforms cache share cards aggressively. After changing tags, run the URL through the platform's own debugger (LinkedIn Post Inspector, Facebook Sharing Debugger) to force a re-scrape. The generator's output is instant; the platforms' memories are not.
