AI search statistics, with the sources attached
Every number below links to its primary source and carries its collection date. Where studies disagree, we show both and say why. Last verified August 19, 2026.
The headline numbers
- 900 million people use ChatGPT weekly (OpenAI, Feb 2026)
- 2.5 billion people see Google's AI Overviews monthly (Google, May 2026)
- When an AI summary appears, Google result clicks drop from 15% to 8% of visits (Pew, 2025)
- Top-result CTR falls 58% under an AI Overview (Ahrefs, Dec 2025)
- Branded mentions predict AI visibility three times better than backlinks (Ahrefs, 2026)
- Google still handles 89.5% of worldwide search (StatCounter, Jul 2026)
Details, sources, and the caveats that make these numbers usable are below.
How many people use AI search?
900 million
weekly active ChatGPT users, per OpenAI's announcement (OpenAI via TechCrunch, announced Feb 27, 2026)
Up from 400 million a year earlier and 800 million in October 2025. Later reports of one billion remain unconfirmed by OpenAI as of our last check.
50 million
paying ChatGPT subscribers, announced alongside the usage figure (OpenAI via TechCrunch, announced Feb 27, 2026)
2.5 billion
monthly users of Google's AI Overviews, per CEO Sundar Pichai (Google via CNBC, stated May 19, 2026)
Up from the 2 billion figure Google reported earlier in 2026, across 200+ countries and 40 languages.
89.5%
of worldwide search queries still run through Google (StatCounter, July 2026)
Down from roughly 91% in 2023: a slow drift, not a collapse.
How often do AI answers appear in Google?
18%
of real-world Google queries triggered an AI summary in Pew's tracked-browsing panel (12,593 of 68,879 queries) (Pew Research Center, March 2025 browsing data, published July 2025)
The most transparent prevalence measurement available: real users, disclosed methodology. Trade keyword panels report anywhere from the mid-teens to far higher shares depending on keyword mix and date, which is why we anchor on the study whose method you can read.
Informational >> transactional
informational queries trigger AI Overviews at several times the rate of commercial and transactional queries (Semrush, 2025 tracking study)
Directionally consistent across every panel we reviewed: the more question-shaped the query, the likelier the AI answer.
What do AI answers do to clicks?
8% vs 15%
click-through rate on Google results with an AI summary present versus without one (Pew Research Center, March 2025 browsing data)
1%
of visits clicked a source link inside the AI summary itself (Pew Research Center, March 2025 browsing data)
26% vs 16%
share of users ending their browsing session after a results page with an AI summary versus without (Pew Research Center, March 2025 browsing data)
34.5%
lower click-through rate for the top-ranking result when an AI Overview is present, in Ahrefs' first measurement (Ahrefs, March 2025 data, published April 2025)
58%
reduction in top-result CTR with an AI Overview present, in Ahrefs' follow-up measurement (Ahrefs via Search Engine Land, December 2025 data)
Same research team, two collection dates, deepening effect: 34.5% in March 2025, 58% by December 2025. We show both because that's the real shape of the trend, not a contradiction.
What predicts AI visibility?
r = 0.737
correlation between YouTube mentions and AI visibility, the strongest single signal in Ahrefs' 75,000-brand study (Ahrefs, published May 2026)
r = 0.664
correlation between branded web mentions and AI visibility (Ahrefs, published May 2026)
r = 0.218
correlation between backlinks and AI visibility, roughly a third of the branded-mention signal (Ahrefs, published May 2026)
The full ranking: YouTube mentions 0.737, branded web mentions 0.664, branded anchor text 0.527, brand search volume 0.392, backlinks 0.218. Correlation is not causation, and the study says so too; the pattern still favors being talked about over being linked to.
Is traditional search dying?
-25% by 2026
Gartner's February 2024 prediction for traditional search engine volume, driven by AI chatbots and virtual agents (Gartner, predicted Feb 19, 2024)
-50% by 2028
Gartner's companion prediction for organic search traffic as consumers adopt generative AI search (Gartner, predicted Feb 19, 2024)
Reality check, because a stats page owes you one: as of mid-2026, StatCounter still shows Google near 89.5% of worldwide search, and no 25%-scale volume collapse has shown up in public data. What HAS materialized is the click decline documented above. Volume held; clicks thinned. Both things are true, and the difference is where AI search strategy actually lives.
Our original data: The Frontier Search Report
Everything above aggregates other people's research. Our own is in the field: a pre-registered study of 120 frozen commercial queries across four AI surfaces, with a control group of pages that rank but never get cited. The methodology was published before a single data point was collected, and the findings will be summarized here and published in full on the study page.
How these statistics were selected
Every figure on this page passes six checks before it ships: traceable to a named primary source, dated with its collection period, quoted with the qualifiers the source attached, current or explicitly aged, worth a journalist's citation, and reachable so you can check it yourself. When sources conflict we show both with dates and explain the difference; we never average disagreements into fake consensus. Numbers that circulate widely but can't be traced past aggregator roundups don't appear here, which is why this page is shorter than some. We re-verify quarterly and update the date at the top when we do.
