The Account Operating Thesis
Don't inherit my settings. Inherit my reasoning. Fourteen fields that record why a Google Ads account is built the way it is, so the next person to touch it cannot tidy away six months of learned context.
What's inside
- The fourteen fields, each with a prompt and a worked example from an invented business
- A baseline block you redo quarterly, so the budget fields have something to be measured against
- The decision log, which records why a change happened rather than what changed
- Six operating rules, including the one that stops a $2,000 test becoming a $15,000 test
- A "cleanup already proposed and declined" field, which is what actually protects a deliberate oddity from the next tidy-up
- A handover packet checklist for the day an account changes hands
Why it exists
Every account accumulates scar tissue. A setting switched off because it burned you once. A region split out because it closes at twice the rate. A negative keyword that exists because one query spent $4,000. Someone can arrive, apply every current best practice, produce a beautifully clean structure, and destroy six months of learned context.
Google's Change History will not save you. It records what changed, never why. This template is where the why lives.

FAQ
- What is an account operating thesis?
- A short document, kept outside Google Ads, that records the reasoning behind an ad account rather than its settings. Fourteen fields cover what you sell and what a customer is worth, which conversion Google optimizes toward, what counts as a qualified lead, what brand traffic is allowed to claim, target costs and the arithmetic behind them, known bad traffic, tests already run, things that look wrong and are intentional, what would justify more or less budget, and what remains unknown.
- Why keep it outside Google Ads?
- Because Change History records what changed, not why. It will tell you a target cost per acquisition moved from $120 to $145. It will not tell you that it moved because sales reported this campaign's leads close at 31% against 12% elsewhere. The second sentence is the one the next operator needs, and there is nowhere in the interface to put it.
- Who is this for?
- Anyone who runs a Google Ads account or pays someone to. If you run it yourself, it is the document that stops you undoing your own decisions six months later. If an agency runs it, it doubles as the list of questions to send them: paste the fourteen fields into an email and ask for answers in writing. An agency that cannot answer them is optimizing an account it does not understand.
- How long does it take to fill in?
- About an hour for the first sitting, which covers three of the fourteen fields plus one decision log entry. That much is already worth keeping. The rest comes in a second pass, and "unknown" is a real answer to any of it: field fourteen exists to collect the unknowns rather than hide them.
- What makes Narsil Creative different?
- Narsil Creative is an AI SEO agency with published pricing at $1,500 and $4,000 per month, and paid media as an add-on beside it. We publish the method rather than gate it: the full account method this template comes from is free to read, and the template is the working copy of the same thing. If a tactic could not survive being published, we treat it as a liability rather than a tactic.
